Streetwear Spotlight: Scope Urban Apparel + GIVEAWAY!

Many times we get asked: “What does it take to be featured in the weekly Streetwear Spotlight section?” Well, one of the main factors depends on how much variety is in your initial collection. Jeremy Rodriguez blew SoJones.com away with his first collection by offering up a wide selection with high-quality design. At only 19 years-old this young student, along with his crew at Scope Urban Apparel, shows us how it’s done while setting the bar high for start-up streetwear lines. Check our interview with Jeremy about his line: Scope Urban Apparel.

Introduce yourself and describe how you started your brand.
My name is Jeremy Rodriguez, CEO and Founder of Scope Urban Apparel. I’m a 19 year old student from Roxbury. Scope was born out of collaboration. I had wanted to start a clothing line for a long time and was working on concepts with my friend Byrd. He brought me to Jake for a logo design last May and from there the three of us vibed and came up with Scope. Jake came on board as our Art and Communications director, bringing our other friend Jesse “Catch Wreck” in for marketing and from there the movement grew into the all star team of young ambitious creative cats it is now: Adrian (Operations) Jerome, Luis P, Elizabeth (Art), Dante Luna, (Networking, Video) Agustin, Luis G.(sales Operations) True East Ent. (Street Team) as well as the family of artists and young entrepreneurs we collaborate with: OverTIme Often O.T.O, Prime Suspects Musik, Retrospek, Cool Collective Reps CCR, UJBA University and many others who support in many ways.

How would you describe this season’s theme and inspiration for your line?
With our Debut line we wanted to represent the variety our brand is about. Some tees were overtly political and covered specific topics like the the Puerto Rican Independence movement or the connection between slavery and the police in Boston. Others took a more satirical aim at still serious issues, like police in our communities or artistic plagiarism and the “appropriation” of revolutionary images by for-profit endeavors. Some were type based and just used words to simply say what we all were thinking. Some paid a tribute to our love of comic books. All of the designs are direct and immediately accessible, but if you take the time there are details and layers of meaning in every tee.

Any product placements on celebs we should keep an eye out for?
Curren$y, Ski Beatz, Joell Ortiz, Black Milk, Rah Digga, Bun B, Havoc, Mobb Deep, Anjuli Stars, John Robinson, Bad Rabbits, Retrospek, Catch Wreck, Edo G, Mr. Peter Parker, DJ Pup Dawg, Millyz and more to come…

What’s been a surprise fashion hit over the last year?
The “I Hate Boston Haters,” “Bite of Crime” and “Steal Art Make Money” tees are especially popular. We’re glad people have a sense of humor in these serious times.

What current fashion trend would you like to see die?
Skinny Jeans on men.

What’s one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
Toss up between my watch from Ragnarok Clothing or new kicks from Heyday Footwear. Gotta support the local brands.

TuPac or Biggie?
Big Pun!
