We usually do features and giveaways on Fridays, but this time, we decide to spark up your Monday with a Dave McClane Clothing, a clothing line which expresses the inner-city culture which sometimes should be made on your own. Get to know the line better as SoJones editor chats with Herb Germany, the creator of Dave McClane Clothing.
Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
My name is Herb Germany and I’m the creator of Dave McClane Clothing. Dave McClane was officially launched a few years ago primarily as a means of expressing the inner-city culture in which I was raised; a culture with which you sometimes had to make due, with what you can make. As kids, we grew up in LA raising pigeons, riding mini-bikes, and always stayed strapped with a bean shooter or slingshot, lol. My brand reflects much of that inner-city perception along with my increasing passion for learning. Influenced by Fubu and the Fat Albert collection, I knew as early as 1998 that I wanted to start a streetwear brand, but running the streets always presented set backs.
I can recall a particular day that I sat down and contemplated all types of trendy names for the brand. Ultimately, Dave McClane is the name that stuck. Dave McClane is the name of a cartoon character that I created back in elementary school. Who would have known that I would later name a streetwear brand after him?
Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
My latest season consisted of the designs titled Gator Boot, Donut Dave, Harley Dave, followed by the snap back caps. My thinking behind this collection was just to establish the westcoast inner-city, “ear to the street,” roots of Dave McClane Clothing. When creating the collection, Harley Davidson motorcycles in Los Angeles was beginning to become even more popular, so being the “ear to the street” brand that we are, we depicted this in our designs, “Gator Boot” and “Harley Dave.” These two designs in particular are popular on the Harley circuit. With that being established, our next collection will venture out a bit more.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
As of now I haven’t had any celebs to endorse the brand, but I’m hoping all that will change after this Sojones feature, lol. Actually, I have had one, Glasses Malone. I sat down with Glasses who gave me some advice that I shall never forget, “It’s always the person behind the idea which will determine whether it succeeds,” or something like that. I got a lot of respect for him for taking the time to chill with Dave McClane Clothing, and if he reads this, good lookin’ again homie.
What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
Honestly, I would have to say the skinny jeans. I’m not a fan of dudes in super tight pants, but I must admit that the whole phenomenon of skinnies does have me rockin’ slim straights and keeping trim.
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
After this last semester of school, I definitely would have to say pants sagging below your butt crack. I don’t have anything against sagging, but when your pants so low that I have to hold my breath when you pass by my desk, that aint cool. But apparently…that’s the style.
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
That’s really hard to say, I feel as though my latest pieces are always more prized over anything previous. But if I really had to pick one, I would say the “Donut Dave” design. This piece came together well with color coordination and concept. I had Inglewood in mind when I created that design which features the Randy’s donut landmark.
TuPac or Biggie?
No one can lyrically transfix me in a visual scene the way Biggie can, but for so many other reasons I gotta ride with Pac.
