What started out as a retail store for outdoor gear, North Face evolved into a company of world class innovation for outdoor apparel and equipment. The brand’s logo symbolizes the north face of a mountain in Northern Hemisphere.

In 1966, Douglas Tompkins an American Environmentalist and Hap Klopp a business magnate built the retail store of climbing equipments in San Francisco, California. In just a short period, they started manufacturing and producing their own outdoor goods, outerwear and camping equipment.

The company’s commitment to establish the standards in premium outdoor products led them to introduce such products as the geodesic dome tent, a lightweight tent made to withstand high-altitudes, and sleeping bags with synthetic insulation. Another of notable contribution the company has produced is their extreme ski-wear line, catering to snow sports athletes.

By the end of the 1980’s, North Face was recognized as the sole manufacturer and provider of exceptional, advanced apparel and equipment for mountaineering, skiing, and backpacking. This reputation of providing superior outdoor goods was generated through the release of “Expedition System” a clothing line made to endure severe weather combinations. Eventually this particular line grew popular among top-notch mountain climbers.

The success of the North Face brand was to be credited largely to Hap Klopp, the venture’s CEO for 20 years. According to Evolve Sports—a San Francisco based sports management team—during Klopp’s management, “The North Face grew from a back room, 14 person operation into an enterprise employing more than 1,000 people involved in manufacturing, licensing, retailing and distribution in 45 countries”. Conversely his partner, Douglas Tompkins managed to sell his shares in 1968 and teamed up with his then wife Susie Tompkins Buell to start a casual fashion line called ESPRIT.

Odyssey Holdings, Inc. (OHI) took over the company in 1988, when an attempt to dispose of obsolete materials by manufacturing lower-priced goods resulted in havoc. At the time North Face went against its high-quality brand image by producing cheaper goods with cheaper quality. This action disappointed consumers and a number of outlets were forced to close.

Even with a crisis at hand, North Face’s iconic status cannot be diminished so easily and the enterprise managed to climb back to the mountain’s peak.

In 1994, Marsden S. Cason headed up the new executive team for a different expedition. They introduced the Summit Shops, a line of casual wear fitted to a larger market. The company also unveiled a new line of sportswear, Tekware, which was “designed to provide rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, trail runners, and outdoor enthusiasts with the ultimate fit and function”.

North Face has pledged to continually innovate their product lines so that consumers can push themselves to explore and create their own adventures.
